Positive Parenting 101: Middle Childhood (9-11 years old)

This time between 9 and 11 years old can be full of growing independence from family and more interest in friends. These healthy friendships are very important to your child’s development, but peer pressure can become strong during this time. When a child feels good about themselves, they can make good choices too and resist negative peer pressure.

Positive Parenting Tips for Children between 9 and 11 Years Old:

  1. Quality Time: Take some time to talk with your child about their most recent accomplishments, school, and the challenges that they face.

  2. Get Involved with School: Open up that important line of communication between your child’s school and the family by going to school events and meeting your child’s teachers.

  3. Encourage extracurriculars: There are so many fun ways for your child to get more involved in their school community. Joining clubs, sports, or volunteering are all great ways to start!

  4. What’s Right and What’s Wrong: During this time, it’s important to help your child develop their sense of what’s right and wrong. Encourage them to talk out risky behaviors that their friends may be doing, like dangerous physical dares or other activities.

  5. Taking Responsibility: Encourage your child to take on more responsibility around the house. Cleaning and cooking are great ways to do that and spend quality time together.

  6. Set Goals: One great way to engage your child is to discuss their goals. What skills or abilities do they wish they had? How can they learn to develop them?
